Arvin Duane Kravig, age 81 and resident of Flat Rock, North Carolina, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away on Monday, November 22, 2010, at Pardee Hospital, Hendersonville.

Born in Chandler, Minnesota, he was the son of the late Arnold and Elizabeth Kooiman Kravig.

During WWII his family moved to Bellflower, California where Arvin attended and graduated from Bellflower Christian School (now Valley Christian High School).

He was married to his high school sweetheart, Susie De Vries, on May 4, 1949 in Bellflower, California. They have one daughter, Charlene Kravig Prinsen, of Medford, Oregon.

Arvin was a custom butcher, owning Kravigís Lockers in Battle Ground, Washington for many years. Most recently he performed the needed service of farm slaughtering for many customers in Buncombe and Henderson Counties. He worked up until a few days before his death.

Arvin never met a stranger and always enjoyed meeting and talking to people. His humor was well known and Proverbs 17:22, A cheerful heart is good medicine, was a true description of him.

A high school athlete, Arvin loved spectator sports, and two of his favorite teams were the Los Angeles Dodgers and the University of California football team. And much to the chagrin of many local friends, he was a fan of Duke University basketball.

He was raised in the Christian Reformed Church and was currently a member of Dillingham Presbyterian. He had served as deacon in his various congregations and was always the unofficial greeter.

He loved his Lord, attending church and his family.

Arvin is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Susie Kravig; their daughter, Charlene Prinsen and her husband, Paul Prinsen, and their children:

Alex Prinsen and Jessica Custer (Casey and Chloe), Suzanne Prinsen and Ian Hood and Katie Prinsen.

He is also survived by his brother, Glen Kravig of Downey, California, and his two sisters, Eileen Visser and Joan Daley, both of Boise Idaho, as well as many nieces and nephews.

The memorial service will be held at Dillingham Presbyterian Church on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Richard Hicks officiating. Burial will be private.

Memorials may be made to:

Arvin was a great guy, he always had a joke to make you smile when he came to the gun shop. Our prayers are with his family and friends.
