Loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Brenda Delores Staton Byrd, born May 23, 1947, of Rosman, NC, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 5, 2022, at the Elizabeth House in Hendersonville, NC.
Brenda was born in Rosman, NC to James and Mae Staton. Her childhood was simple and they enjoyed giving back to the community every Sunday morning by singing on the radio as a family. Middle and High School brought out her competitiveness earning several scholastic awards while also spending time on the basketball court. This love for the sport brought an unexpected surprise, the introduction of her soon-to-be sweetheart for life.
Her coach always included practice during the holiday season to keep the team’s skills fresh. A scrimmage resulted between the team and the coach’s siblings. After accidentally bloodying her nose during the “friendly” game, David and Brenda were married 5 years later. Moving to Horse Shoe they quickly found their home at Horse Shoe Baptist Church. Brenda’s beautiful voice could be heard many Sundays both during quartet specials & in the choir. She participated in every facet of church life including the director of VBS making sure our children of tomorrow loved Christ as much as she did.
Brenda joins her parents James Benjamin Staton and Emily Mae Staton, and her brother, Joseph Benjamin Staton in Heaven. Brenda is survived by David Reid Byrd (husband), Greta Byrd Sherwood (daughter) and Mike Sherwood, Monica Byrd Watts (daughter), Jeffrey Scott Byrd (son), and Melissa Byrd. Brenda is also survived by her grandchildren whom she loved with all of her being – Dalton Wade Sherwood, David Blake Watts, Hannah Grace Sherwood, and Lillian Mae Byrd.
A Celebration of Brenda’s life will take place at Forest Lawn Funeral Home on Saturday, April 9th as follows:
- Visitation from 12:00 – 1:00pm
- Funeral service from 1:00 – 1:45
Graveside services will follow at 3:30 pm at Mt. Moriah Calvert Church Cemetery in Brevard, NC. Arrangements are by Forest Lawn Funeral Home
Now that Brenda has passed into the arms of our Lord, we should remind ourselves that while this is the end of Brenda’s physical life on Earth, it’s the beginning of an eternal and beautiful journey for her.
Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

Brenda Byrd has been an acquaintance for many years. I have a video (what was called a home movie back then) of a friend’s wedding where Brenda had played the piano for them. Probably in the sixties. Our children went to school together so we connected even more in the eighties. But around the year 2000, I believe, this sweet lady came to work along side us in our business. We were so pleased to have her . Our family and employees thought the world of this precious lady. We became even closer as time went on. It came to be that my Son, a basketball player, and Miss Brenda, a basketball player in her day became rivals….Duke against Carolina….the fun started. You can be sure when their team won, the other got a phone call to “rub it in”. This went on for years. She approached me at work and wanted to know how she could enlarge a picture on the printer. I told her to up the percentage of the image and warned her she would get out many pages. She did just that, took them home an glued them together and attached the image to a piece of cardboard. Since her team had recently won, she wanted to may sure my Son was reminded of the win when he came in to work the next day. He was greeted by a cardboard image of the Carolina coach as he approached his desk. We can assure you , we never had a dull moment when Brenda was there. No matter where we met, whether at the office or out somewhere, there was always laughter. One of the last times was a visit from her and David during the time of covid……there was still a lot of laughter. Brenda Byrd…you were a loving and caring person that we all loved. You will be greatly missed by us all…..until we join you some day…..I know you have made Heaven an even more fun place to be…..and have given all of us , who knew you, many precious memories to cherish.
To the family I am so sorry for your loss. As we are taught our loved ones is praising God and will be waiting for their loved ones. I have loved this family since the first time I have met them. You all will be in my prayers and I am very thankful for have knowing Brenda Byrd as she has always held a place in my heart.
