Charles W. Young, 84, of Asheville, passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2013, while a resident of Deerfield Espicopal Retirement Community. Born in Meadville, PA, he was the son of the late Charles W. Young and Lois K. Young.

He graduated from Mercersburg Academy in Bethlehem, PA, and then graduated from LeHigh University with a degree in Mining Engineering. His career was spent in the Minerals industry. He was employed by the Tennessee Valley Authority in Chattanooga, TN most of his career. He was a member of Civil Defense, a volunteer in the fire department, Boy Scout Leader, President of his Homeowners Assoc., a member of the Chattanooga Canoe Club, a charter member of the Fort Caroline Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville, FL, a charter member of the Chattanooga Chapter of the US Power Squadron, The American Institute of Mining and Metal Engineering, and the Society of Mining Engineers.

Charles was an avid outdoorsman and loved to snow ski, sail, whitewater canoe, hike and loved listening to jazz music.

Mr. Young is survived by his sons, Walter Young and his wife Kimberley of Roanoke, VA, Thomas Young and his wife Collette of Chattanooga, TN, Christopher of Indianapolis; daughter, Christine Witmer and her husband William of Clearfield, PA; a grandson, Davis of Chattanooga; a brother Philip Young and his wife Nancy of Blacksburg, VA; and a sister Jean Y. Morrow of Hendersonville, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be at 2:00pm, Sunday, January 6, 2013 in the St. Giles Chapel at Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community in Asheville. A private interment will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4-6pm Saturday in the Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel in Hendersonville.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Alice Lloyd College, 100 Purpose Road, Pippa Passes, KY 41844.

Charles will be greatly missed by all who knew him. I will cherish my fond memories of Charlie. My dear friend.
