Charles William Blackwell, 92, of Hendersonville, NC, passed away on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, after a lengthy illness. Charles was born in the Tracey Grove Community of Hendersonville, NC, to the late Robert Lee and Gussie Victoria Epley Blackwell. He was also preceded in death by his infant twin son and daughter.
Before settling in Hendersonville, he lived in Pennsylvania, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Virginia.
Charles had an extensive work history which included working as a carrier for the Hendersonville Times as a youth, five years at Kalmia Dairy, 17 years at General Electric Lighting Systems in Flat Rock, NC, he received his associate degree from Blue Ridge Community College and retired from United States Air Force after 20 years. He received the Air Force Commendation Medal twice during his career.
He also served as president of the PTA in Gettysburg, SD. Charles was an avid flower gardener and particularly loved roses.
Charles is survived by his loving wife of 74 years, Marjorie Lillian Jones; daughter, Debra Blackwell Stephens and her husband Blane Stephens of Hendersonville; son, Charles Robert Blackwell and his wife Pamela Diane Lamb Blackwell of Rochester, MN; grandchildren, Bryan Fields, Dustin Fields, Joseph Blackwell, and Katherine Blackwell; great grandchildren, Lily Fields and Violet Fields; sister, Francis Priscilla Blackwell Jackson of Anderson, SC.
A private service for the family will be held in May with Reverend Mark Stanley of Trinity Presbyterian officiating.
