Dorothy ìDotî Frances Ulchar, 91, of Mills River, passed away Friday, January 27, 2012 at Elizabeth House following a period of declining health. A native of Hempstead, NY, she lived in Long Island, NY before moving to Henderson County in 1982. She was a daughter of the late George and May Stevens Wurtz, and the wife of the late Frederick ìFredî A. Ulchar who died in 2006. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Geralyn Ulchar in 1968. She was a secretary with Wantagh High School in Wantagh, NY, retiring in 1983. During WWII, she worked as a secretary with Grumman Aircraft, performing duties for the Department of the Navy. She was a member of the Catholic faith, a homemaker, secretary, and a member of the Happy Valley Homemakerís Association.
Survivors include a son, James Ulchar of Lowell, MI; a grandson, Justin Ulchar of California; a sister, Marie Brandenstein of Connecticut; a brother, George Wurtz of Long Island, NY; and two nieces, Linda Johnson of Colorado, Karen Hendel of Connecticut.
A memorial service will be at 10:00 am Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at Spring Arbor West. Capuchin Friars of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church will officiate. Interment will follow at a later date in Westbury, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Four Seasons Compassion for Life, 571 S. Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731.
