Emma Charlotte Woelfel Van Voorhis, 95, of Etowah, died Wednesday, August 12, 2015, at her sonís home in Flat Rock. She was a native of Mishawaka, IN, the daughter of the late Martin Woelfel and Margaret Schoenauer Woelfel of Germany. Before moving to Henderson County in 1990 she was a resident of Stamford, Ct. Prior to retiring, she worked for many years as a top executive assistant and was also copy editor for Progressive Architecture magazine. She played and taught contract bridge and was a Life Master. She was a Christian Scientist. Mrs. Van Voorhis is survived by two sons, Jerry Alan Van Voorhis and his wife, Lockett of Berryville, VA and David Eugene Van Voorhis of Flat Rock; two grandchildren, Bernard Chandler Van Voorhis of The Plains, VA and Lockett Kiely Van Voorhis MacKnight of Trumbull, CT and five great-grandchildren, Claiborne Hanzel Van Voorhis, Haley Roo Van Voorhis, Elle Lockett MacKnight, Katherine Sinclair MacKnight and Lilian Grey MacKnight. A funeral will be held 11:00 am Saturday, August 15, in the chapel of Forest Lawn Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Four Seasons Compassion for Life Elizabeth House, 571 S. Allen Rd. Flat Rock, NC 28731.
