Fred Brooks, 79, of Hendersonville, went peacefully to his heavenly home December 4, 2009, surrounded by his loving family. He was a son of the late David and Gertie Brooks, and was also preceded in death by sisters Selma Watson, Olive Hall, Sylvia Finley, Juanita Fletcher, and a brother, Tom Brooks.

He was born and raised in Madison County. He was an Army veteran, holding the rank of corporal. He moved to Hendersonville where he was one of the first employees of General Electric Corporation, retiring in 1992. He was past commander of VFW Post #5206, and was a member of AMVETS. He loved his country and flew his flag proudly. He was an avid reader, with a special interest in history. He followed the Red Sox, and thought Ted Williams was the greatest player who ever played. He loved wildlife, fishing, and hunting.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-two years, Jewel Corn Brooks; a daughter Joy Brooks; a son, Steven Brooks and his wife Linda Purvis Brooks, all of Hendersonville. He was the loving grandfather to Justin, Christian, Kelsey, and Alexis Brooks, all of Hendersonville; three sisters, Jean Dunlap, Nina Lee Brooks both of Greenville, SC, Mary B. Sams of Hendersonville; brothers, Lionel Brooks of Hot Springs, Rex Brooks of Newport, TN; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life will be at 2:00 p.m., Monday, in the chapel of Forest Lawn Mortuary. Rev. Travis Harrison will officiate. The family will receive friends from 12 noon to 2:00 p.m., prior to the service in the chapel and at other times will be at the home of Joy Brooks. Military honors will be provided by Hubert M. Smith American Legion Post #77, Hedrick-Rhodes VFW Post # 5206, and DAV Chapter 14.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Balfour Baptist Church, 2502 Asheville Hwy. Hendersonville, NC 28791, or Four Seasons Compassion for Life, 571 S. Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731.
