Frederick Joseph Compo, 85, of Hendersonville, passed away Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at The Laurels of Hendersonville. A native of Mineola, NY, he lived in Henderson county since 1988. He was the son of the late Frederick and Ella Compo, and was also preceded in death by his former wife, Rena M. Compo Favreau.
Many will remember him as guitarist and entertainer in the musical group The Melodiers. He was a member of “The Greatest Generation”, serving honorably in the Navy during WWII as a “tin can sailor” aboard the destroyer, USS Hilary P. Jones DD-427. He retired from Norton Company in Waterliet, NY and worked with Sears automotive in Asheville after moving to Hendersonville. He attended Beulah Baptist Church and was a life member of the Hendersonville American Legion, VFW and DAV.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas F. Compo of MN, Jeffrey Compo of Arlington, VA; two daughters, Diane Compo Milow of Mound, MN, Jamie Compo Guilmette of Horse Shoe; two grandsons, Stephen Milow, Jaimen Guilmette; and his former wife, Jeanne Godwin of Landrum, SC.
A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel at Forest Lawn Mortuary. Rev. Bill Landreth will officiate. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn memorial Park. Military honors will be conducted by Hubert M. Smith American Legion Post #77, Hedrick-Rhodes VFW Post #5206, and DAV Chapter 14.
