Herman “Bruce” McIntyre, at the age of 85, peacefully went to be with his savior, Jesus Christ on Monday, January 15, 2024. He was a member of Biltmore Church.  He was a devoted teacher of God’s word, a good and faithful servant whose desire was to lead others to Christ.

Bruce was the son of Earl Hughes McIntyre and Nell Dorthy Reed, of the Oakley section of Buncombe County, and he was a member of the 1st graduating class from AC Reynolds in 1956. He married his wife, and life-long companion, Betty Jean Shillinglaw, following his high school graduation.

His education was continued at Clemson University- receiving his BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1960.  Bruce was a member of the Clemson ROTC program and commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve upon graduation. After completing officer basic training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, he was reassigned to Fort Jackson, South Carolina as a training officer in a basic training company. While waiting for assignment at Fort Jackson, Bruce became a member of the United States Army Reserve in Asheville, North Carolina. Bruce retired from the United States Army Reserve with 28 years of service as a Lieutenant Colonel

Bruce was employed by Olin Chemical Corporation in Brevard, North Carolina (aka Ecusta Paper, PH Glatfelter) where he held several positions in both technical and manufacturing. Following retirement from Ecusta Paper, Bruce was employed by Fruitland Baptist Bible Institute as the director of maintenance and retired with 10 years of service with the North Carolina Baptist Convention.

In addition to Bruce’s parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Betty.

He was a loving husband and father, and is survived by his wife, Betty Jean of 67 years; daughters, Beckie (Mike) and Beverly (Robert); and son, Bobby (Melissa); seven grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren.  Bruce is also survived by his brother, Reverend Donald McIntyre (Gail); and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Biltmore Church-Arden Campus on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., prior to the service at the church.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial donation in Mr. McIntyre’s memory are asked to consider, Biltmore Baptist Church Arden Campus, 35 Clayton Road, Arden, NC 28704.
