Joe G. Costner, 77, of Hendersonville passed away Monday, February 4, 2013 at Elizabeth House after a short illness. A native of Norfolk, VA, he retired to his hometown, Hendersonville seven years ago. He was a son of the late Sidney and Carrie Costner, and was also preceded in death by a brother, Dwight Costner and a sister, Dixie Nix.
A Navy veteran serving during the Vietnam era, Joe retired as a 1st Class Petty Officer after serving twenty years in the Navy. He then successfully owned and operated a truck cover and accessory business with his son and brother in the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area for thirty years. After retiring from this, he maintained his love for fishing which included thirty years of tournament fishing, and his passion for tending roses. After visiting his mother and attending his great nieceís wedding, he rekindled a romance that had begun in high school. In 2006 he married Faye Carland and returned to Hendersonville where he lived out the remainder of his life. Joe attended First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his loving wife, Faye Costner; a son, Sidney Costner and his wife Jeanie of Virginia Beach, VA; a daughter, Leigh-Ann Costner of Nashville, TN; three step-sons, Terry Carland and his wife Pam of Etowah, Gary Carland of Mills River, Randy Carland and his wife Cindy of Etowah; two half-sisters, Debbie Costner Pasour and her husband Ray, and Melody Costner Davis and her husband Robert, all of Gastonia; four grandchildren, Kaitlan Costner, Michelle Costner, Patricia Jones, and Tyler Anders, all of Virginia Beach, VA; four step-grandchildren, Amanda, Kandy, Miranda, and Logan Carland; two great-grandchildren, Jordan and Malachi Jones of Virginia Beach, VA; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A funeral will be at 3:00 pm Saturday, February 9, 2013 in the Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Wally Shamburger will officiate. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3pm prior to the service in the chapel.

Sidney, I was so sorry to read about your Dad. I trust he had a peaceful exit. All I can say is, many times in the future years there will always be special memories that come to mind and cause you to smile about all the good times. Cherish those memories my friend.
