Robert (Bob) Vance “Buddie” Mauney, 90, of Hendersonville, NC, died Wednesday, September 1, 2010, at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, NC.
Born August 23, 1920 in the SS Mauney home in Cherryville, NC, Bob was the son of Monroe Cone Mauney and Jewell Dellinger Mauney.
Bob graduated from Bessemer City High School in 1937. Bob served in the US Naval Reserve from 1940 until 1941 and then during World War II in the US Army Air Force Reserves Corps, where he was a 2nd Lieutenant from 1942 until 1946. He continued to serve as a 1st Lt. in the Reserves until 1955. He attended Clemson University, then received a Bachelors in Chemistry from Lenoir-Rhyne College in 1943. He completed his MBA in 1950 at the University of Denver. He joined United Airlines in 1955 and worked for over 30 years as a statistical analyst, transferring with the airlines when it relocated its headquarters from Denver to Chicago, IL. He retired in 1983.
After a six month courtship, he married his beloved wife, Lores (Lory) A. Mauney on July 26, 1958, at Messiah Lutheran Church in Denver, CO and was married for 41 years until her death in 1999. After retirement, they moved to Conover, NC, where they were very active at Faith Lutheran and with the Lenior-Rhyne Golden Bears alumni organization.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law; Nancy Jewell Mauney Cartledge and Glenn Edmond Cartledge of Atlanta, GA, Catherine Lee Mauney Langsdorf and the Rev. Kenneth Allen Langsdorf of Hendersonville, NC; four grandchildren, Amanda Nell Cartledge, currently residing in Columbia, SC and Matthew Glenn Cartledge, of Atlanta, GA, Nadine Heather Langsdorf and Evan Vance Langsdorf, both of Hendersonville, NC; and his sister, Nancy Ruth Mauney Pannell, of Conover, NC. His sisters, Dorothy Nell Mauney Whitley and Caroline Margaret Mauney Moyer preceded him in death.
A memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 4, 2010, at Grace Lutheran Church with Rev. Greg Williams officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Four Seasons Compassion for Life, 571 S. Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731 or Lenoir-Rhyne University, 625 7th Avenue NE, Hickory, NC 28601 or faith-based entity of your choosing.
