Russell Victor Penley of East Flat Rock, North Carolina, a beloved father, son, brother, grandson, and friend, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, August 17, 2023, in Asheville, North Carolina. He was born on November 13, 1993, making him just 29 years old at the time of his passing.

Russell was an extraordinary young man who had an incredible passion for life. As a devoted father, he cherished every moment spent with his boys Lucus (10) and Malakai (6) Penley, creating precious memories that would last a lifetime. Russell found solace and joy in nature, and he loved being outdoors. Whether it was mountain biking, wake skiing, camping, hiking, kayaking, snowboarding, or simply gazing at the stars, Russell embraced the beauty of the world around him.

In addition to his outdoor pursuits, Russell also dedicated his time to mission trips with Carpenter’s Hands Ministry. Through this ministry, he extended his helping hand to those in need, spreading love and kindness wherever he went. Russell’s faith was an integral part of his life, and he attended Mud Creek Baptist Church in Hendersonville, North Carolina.  He was employed by Fluor-United

Russell will forever be remembered for his contagious smile and the positive influence he had on those around him. He touched their lives and was a great influence to so many and will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His love for his family and friends was unwavering, and he was always there to lend a helping hand or offer support.

Russell’s passing leaves a void in the lives of those he leaves behind. In addition to his two precious sons Lucus and Malakai, he is survived by his loving parents, Brian and Teresa Huscusson, as well as his birth parents, Ralph Penley (Kim) and Beth LaFleur. His grandparents, Raymond and Peggy Huscusson, Chris Grant, and Leila Penley, will forever hold him dear in their hearts. Russell also leaves behind three cherished sisters, Brittanie LaFleur, Taylor Smith (Chevy), and Dakota Mitchell (Josh); along with two adoring brothers, Brian Penley (Leah) and Scott Sarratt (Brittany).

The impact Russell made on his nephews and nieces cannot be understated. He was a loving presence in the lives of Drayton Sweezy, Kayson Victor LaFleur, Axel Smith, Jax and Austin Penley, and Brantley and Braxton Mitchell. Additionally, he leaves behind three nieces, Nori Clark, Macayla and Maddy Sarratt, who will always remember his warmth and affection. Russell’s extended family, comprising numerous cousins, aunts, and uncles, mourns the loss of this remarkable individual.

Russell is greeted by his departed loved ones who preceded him in death. These include his beloved “Nanny”, Gayle Grant, as well as his “Mamaw”, Gladys Huscusson, and “Paw”, Vernon Penley.

A celebration of Russell’s life will be held on Saturday, August 26, 2023, at 3:00 p.m. at Mud Creek Baptist Church in Hendersonville. Pastor Craig Halford will officiate the ceremony, and the family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., prior to the service, at the church.
