Sandra Sue Ackerbaum Portugal, age 85, of Hendersonville, NC peacefully passed away on September 24, 2023, at Elizabeth House. Born on July 7, 1938, in Cleveland, Ohio Sandra was the beloved daughter of the late Edward Ackerbaum and Nancy Halpern.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her loving husband, Ronald J. Portugal and her brother, Dr. Ronald J. Ackerbaum.

Sandra’s career spanned many years, during which she served as an administrative assistant to the Head of Geriatrics at Yale Hospital (formerly St. Raphael’s Hospital). Her dedication and attention to detail were highly valued in her professional role.

Outside of work, Sandra pursued numerous interests and hobbies. She was a proud member of Hadassah, a charitable organization that supports healthcare initiatives in Israel. Additionally, Sandra took on the role of a Cub Scout leader, positively impacting the lives of young boys as they navigated their scouting journey. One of her favorite pastimes was bowling, where she not only enjoyed the sport but also cherished the camaraderie shared with fellow bowlers.

Formally of North Haven, CT, Sandra leaves behind a legacy of hard work, commitment, and kindness. Sandra’s impact on the lives she touched was immeasurable.

Sandra will be dearly missed by her loving sons, David Portugal, and his wife, Elaina of Etowah and Howard Portugal and his wife, Suzi of Toms River, NJ; grandchildren, Jacob, Maximus, Cameron, Jacqueline, Matthew, Rebecca, Morgan, and Dylan; great grandchildren, Payton, Logan and James; sister-in-law, Vivian Ackerbaum and special nephew, Steven Adelman and his wife, Linda as well as a host of family and friends who were fortunate to have known her during her time with us.

A Memorial Luncheon to celebrate Sandra’s life will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at 12:00 pm at Forest Lawn Funeral Home. We invite all those who knew and loved Sandra to attend and share in the memories of her remarkable life.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the 4 Seasons Hospice Elizabeth House, a testament to Sandra’s compassionate nature.
