Valma Virginia Corne Mewborn

August 5, 1929 - May 11, 2023

08/05/1929 - 05/11/2023

Home with the Lord! On Thursday, May 11th, our beloved Valma Virginia Corne Mewborn went into eternity to meet her loved ones and her Saviour.

She was born in Henderson County, North Carolina on August 5, 1929, to Blake and Ollie Levi Corne, of Tuxedo.

After high school graduation with many honors and awards, she enrolled in her beloved Brevard College in Brevard, North Carolina, graduating with her Associates in Business degree. It was during her college years she met her husband-to-be, William Edgar Mewborn of Kinston, N.C.

After marriage and seminary graduation, William entered the ministry with the United Methodist Church and together they pastored many churches in the Carolinas.

After decades of ministry and marriage; Rev. Mewborn went to his reward preceding Valma by 20 years. Valma served her Lord and Saviour in many capacities; pianist, church secretary, Sunday school teacher, singer, charities, and community service volunteer. She had a talent for gardening, avid reader, and was a master artist at crochet. She won many awards, including “Homemaker of the Year” for the Clemson University Extension, mentoring young women.

She held many positions in the workplace. Secretarial positions in law offices, Mills, retail establishments, county offices, Pope Air Force Base, and others.

She was preceded by her father and mother, her sister, Sylvia Corne Mintz, her brother-in-law, Dr. Carl F. Mintz, her brother-in-law Clarence Stansell, USN Ret., and her niece, Vanessa Y. Mintz.

She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Elaine Corne Stansell, of Charleston South Carolina. Also survived by several nieces and nephews, including her special caregivers of several years, Andrea Little Gray, and her sister Jessica Little Freeman, both great nieces, of Hendersonville North Carolina.

She was a special lady with a sweet spirit and a lovely smile. She was loved by all! And she will be sorely missed.

There will be a graveside memorial service at 2 PM on Monday, May 15. This will be at the Tuxedo First Baptist Church Cemetery, 458 Mountain View Church Rd., Zirconia, North Carolina, 28790.

Bill Mewborn and my father Bill Hopper were friends since 1958 when the Mewborns were assigned to Kistler’s Chapel UMC in Rutherfordton, NC. He visited our family every year for the rest of his life. I never met Valma, but I always just assumed she was a saint. I wish I had known her and I wish she could see all of the Bill Mewborn memorabilia I continue to find as I clean out my parents’ home.

Valma and her husband ‘Preacher Bill’ served at my home church Capers Chapel United Methodist Church in Chester South Carolina for several years and after retirement returned to our community and became great supporters of the neighborhood. I can recall Valma attempting to teach us all how to crochet with such patients and love. She was a kind and caring person who I know will be missed by all who knew her; but I am also sure she has left fond loving memories behind as well. My condolences to the family but rest assure there is no doubt she is singing with the King of Kings choir today. Peace be with each of you and God bless.
