Carolyn, 61 and Walter C. Penland, 83 of Horse Shoe died Tuesday, June 26th in Toccoa, GA as a result of injuries sustained in an auto accident. Carolyn and Walter were natives of Buncombe County. Carolyn was a lifelong resident of Henderson County and Walter lived most of his life in Buncombe County.

Carolyn was a daughter of the late Charles and Mildred Wallin. She worked in housekeeping with Pardee Hospital and was a volunteer at Cradle of Forestry Pisgah Forest.

Carolyn is survived by sister, Deborah Ducote and her husband Dan of Etowah; brother, Stanley Wallin and his wife Janice Davis of Kernersville; and two nieces and three nephews.

Walter was a son of the late Cashius and Kathleen Epley Penland and was preceded in death by his sister, Florence Moore; three brothers, Maurice, Horace, and Lloyd Penland.

Walter retired after many years of faithful service to Pardee Hospital and was an avid fisherman. He cherished his wife, Carolyn, who was also his best friend and fishing buddy. Theyloved their family, their church, and most of all they loved their Savior, Jesus Christ. He was a United States Army veteran who served in the Korean War. They were active members of Etowah Baptist Church.

Walter is survived by two sons, Reverend Terry Penland and his wife, Amy of Canton, Earl Penland and his wife, Linda of Black Mountain and a daughter Kathey Penland of Aurora, CO.; sisters, Sue Kates and her husband, Reverend Alcy Kates of Waynesville, Charlotte Johnson, of Marietta, OH, Grace Miller and her husband, Bob of Belmont, WA, and Edith Luck of Indian Harbor, FL; three brothers, Wallace Penland and his wife, Nancy of Howard, PA, Leonard Penland and his wife, Gayle of Candler and Douglas Penland and his wife, Jane of Candler; two grandchildren, Andrew and his wife, Katie of College Station, TX and and Hannah Trapp and her husband Lee of Alexandria, VA; and one great-grandchild Sophia Trapp.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Friday at Etowah Baptist Church. Revs. Brian Henderson and Terry Penland will officiate. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:00pm until 2:00pm prior to the service in the church.
